Community Support through Access to Education and Social Services in Wakiso District
Since 2017, Harvest Foundation has been working closely with marginalized and underprivileged communities in the slums of Wakiso District, addressing pressing issues related to limited access to essential social services such as education, healthcare, safety, and community security. These slum areas are marked by overcrowded living conditions, poor infrastructure, and high levels of poverty, making it difficult for residents—especially vulnerable children and youth—to access basic life opportunities.
One of the Foundation’s key interventions has focused on educational support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs). In the 2017/2018 academic year alone, over 100 OVCs were supported to enroll and study at Global Harvest Secondary School, a school founded and run by the Foundation in Seguku. The school offers a safe and supportive environment where disadvantaged learners can access quality secondary education while also benefiting from psychosocial support, mentorship, and moral guidance.
Beyond this targeted support, the Foundation has enabled more than 1,000 students—many from impoverished or crisis-affected families—to access secondary education through its education sponsorship and advocacy programs. This has been made possible through a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement with the Government of Uganda, under which Global Harvest Secondary School receives universal secondary education grants. These grants have been instrumental in subsidizing school fees and operational costs, making it feasible for children from low-income households to receive formal education without financial strain.
Through this benevolent arm, Harvest Foundation continues to bridge the education gap for children who would otherwise be excluded from formal schooling. The initiative also helps reduce the likelihood of child labor, early marriages, and other vulnerabilities that thrive when children are kept out of school.
In addition to education, the Foundation integrates community outreach and engagement activities, linking families to healthcare providers, offering basic safety awareness sessions, and advocating for improved service delivery from local government structures. The ongoing work in Wakiso is a testament to Harvest Foundation’s unwavering commitment to empowering vulnerable communities, transforming lives, and nurturing a future generation of resilient, educated, and hopeful Ugandans.
