In the districts of Busia and Bugiri, Harvest Foundation has undertaken deliberate efforts to empower marginalized youth and women in underserved sub-counties by advocating for improved social service delivery—particularly in the area of vocational skills development. These regions face high rates of youth unemployment, early school dropout, and limited access to formal education and job opportunities. Recognizing these challenges, the organization initiated a grassroots-driven approach aimed at building local capacity and increasing access to life-changing skills training.

Through community sensitization meetings, collaboration with local leaders, and engagement with vocational training institutions, the Foundation mobilized communities to recognize the value of equipping young people with practical skills. The advocacy also included lobbying district leaders and stakeholders to allocate more support and resources toward skills development initiatives in rural areas.

As a result of these concerted efforts, 120 children and youth—many of whom had dropped out of school or come from vulnerable households—were identified and enrolled in vocational training centers within their localities. These centers offer hands-on training in high-demand trades such as tailoring, hairdressing, carpentry, bricklaying, mechanics, and electrical installation. The selected courses were based on local market needs, ensuring that trainees gain employable skills suited to their environment and community demands.

The program also placed a strong emphasis on gender inclusion, encouraging the participation of both girls and boys, and actively addressing cultural or financial barriers that often prevent young women from accessing vocational education. Harvest Foundation provided initial start-up support in some cases, including basic training materials, transportation stipends, and follow-up mentoring to help the trainees succeed during and after their training.

The detailed breakdown of beneficiaries by district and gender is as follows:

By linking these youth to vocational training, Harvest Foundation is not only improving their chances of self-employment and income generation but also fostering a ripple effect of economic empowerment within their communities. The initiative contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty, reducing vulnerability, and building a more resilient and skilled young population capable of driving sustainable development at the grassroots level.
